Bolivar/Crystal Beach lies a 20-minute ferry ride north of Galveston Island on a 27-mile long windswept, nearly treeless barrier island. Bolivar, which was swept nearly clean by Hurricane Ike in 2008, has begun rebounding with new construction rising in its southern tip near Port Bolivar. A few of the pre-Ike neighborhoods of large beach homes, such as Biscayne Bay, are beginning to sprout in the island’s midsection as well.
