The Grand 1894 Opera House
The beloved Grand 1894 Opera House has a rich history. Not only was it named “The Official Opera House of Texas” by the Texas Legislature in 1993 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. This beautiful and momentous theater is also fully operational and hosts year-round performances, featuring Broadway musicals, shows, dance, and comedic productions.
Located on the Strand in the Galveston’s historic district, Island, Etc. is Galveston’s only professional theater company. This theater has been restored beautifully after surviving Galveston’s storms and hurricanes, and all year the theater presents plays, musicals, films, and concerts. Every six to eight weeks, the Galveston Arts Center hosts an Art Walk on Saturday nights. During the Art Walk, visitors are offered wine and cheese while being escorted through to galleries and boutiques throughout the historic art. This twenty-year tradition promotes both non-profit and commercial galleries, as well as restaurants and stores. Whether you’re a visitor, a newcomer, or a permanent resident – this changing program is an excellent opportunity to see the art community of Galveston.
The Galveston Ballet not only enhances the town’s cultural appeal with regular performances of both contemporary and classical productions, but also enriches the lives of others by offering programs in training, performance, community education, and scholarship. Classes are available for children and adults, and specialty classes are available depending on the time of year.
